The Gulf of Mexico is teeming with life, and is a favorite destination for fishing enthusiasts. The beautiful, clear emerald waters are home to many species of shark, dolphin, and tuna. Fishermen also prize the catches of cobia, amberjack, grouper, snapper, rays, Wahoo, marlin, sailfish and swordfish, King and Spanish Mackerel. Also along the gulf coast are a network of bays and rivers which hold bass, trout, mullet, and shellfish.
It's important for any fisherman to know the proper fishing seasons, limits, and respect the environment. Federal fishing regulations are managed by the fishery management council. There are also state regulations for fish that are not covered by federal law, which apply to fish caught in that state or residents of that state.
The Gulf Coast extends from southwest florida north and west to Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and East Texas. Prime fishing areas are along the coast, as well as near themany deepwater oil rigs located throughout the Gulf. The rigs serve as artificial reefs which attract baitfish and other reef dwellers.
Prime fishing locations include the following communities:
Destin Florida - The World's Luckiest Fishing Village" hosts the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic, and attractive bottom fishing. It is also a family friendly destination, with any choices for hotels and sugar white sand beaches.
Venice, Louisiana is known as "Tuna Town."It is the gateway to the Gulf on the Mississipi Delta. Yellowfin Tuna are a popular catch here, as well as marlin. Home of the Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic and other fishing events, this destination at the end of Belle Chase Highway is a popular spot for anyone who loves fishing in the Redfish Capital of the World.
Orange Beach, Alabama - Fishing has long been an industry in this coastal Alabama town. Beautiful white beaches and a location close to the underwater DeSoto Canyoun mean that deep sea fishing can be within rante for a day rather than having to spend a night at sea.
Pensacola, Florida - Pensacola beach is legendary for clear water, snow white sands, and natural beauty. It is a popular family destination year round, with a large selection of hotels and things to do. As with Orange Beach and Destin, it is close to the DeSoto Canyon, and deep sea fishing is a popular pastime.
Biloxi, Mississippi is famous for beautiful beaches and casinos. It is also well known for a run of big blue marlin. Every year, Biloxi hosts the Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Tournament, one of the most popular billfish tournaments in the region.
Texas is a wonderful destination for sportfishing. It is known as a place where record breaking swordfish catches have topped 450 pounds. A wide variety of fish who live further out from the shore can be found here, such as whale shark, Mahi mahi, flying fish, marlin, and sailfish. The friendly hospitality along the coast is a year round bonus.
